Hi Richard,

If you're specifically looking for a compact camera with a fixed lens then the Fuji X100VI has the least compromises. Great image quality, handling and size as well as a versatile focal length. If you want similar image quality with the ability to zoom/change lenses then the OM System OM-3 or Fuji X-T5 would be excellent choices if budget allows. This article goes more in depth on these cameras and others for travel photography. https://thecotswoldphotographer.com/best-interchangeable-lens-cameras-for-travel-2025-real-picks-i-own/

Hello David,

Your article was very informative! As a person that always takes photos on my phone, what camera would be best to have an upgrade to that? I take photos quite randomly of anything I find interesting, but usually on travel. I’m being a little picky, so what’s a camera with the least cons?

Hi Liz,

Thanks so much — and that sounds like an amazing trip.

The Fujifilm X100VI can absolutely shoot landscapes, but I personally wouldn’t choose a fixed 35mm equivalent lens for a trip like that unless you already know you’re happy working at that focal length.

From my own experience shooting landscapes, I often find myself wanting both:

Something wider for big scenes
And the ability to zoom in to pick out details or compress distant elements

That’s the limitation with the Fuji — you’re locked into one perspective. Cropping helps, but it’s not the same as having real reach when you need it.

Given what you’ve said — wanting something compact but flexible — I’d go with the Sony option with its zoom lens. It simply gives you more flexibility.

If you already loved the idea of the Fuji and were happy to work within that constraint, it would still produce beautiful images.

But for this trip, I’d personally choose flexibility.

Hope that helps, and enjoy the trip.

All the best

Hi David,

Wow! What great information! Thoughtful and easy to understand.

I’m a hobby landscape photographer. Heading to Lotofen in a few months and don’t want to haul a massive camera and lenses yet, want something better than my cell phone. I’m leaning towards the Fuji but (and this is going to show my ignorance) I’m concerned how the fixed lens does with landscapes? I know I can crop in post if I want to “zoom” in on something but wondering if I should consider the Sony because of the zoom.

I would appreciate any insight or direction you might have. Thanks (so much) Liz

In reply to <a href="https://thecotswoldphotographer.com/best-compact-cameras-travel-photography-2025/#comment-497">Graeme Cunningham</a>.

Hi Graeme, thanks for your comment — really appreciate it.

If you’re after a compact camera and are happy buying used, I’d narrow it down to two strong options depending on what matters most to you. If you want something truly pocketable that you can carry everywhere, the Ricoh GR III is a great choice and excellent value used — image quality is superb for its size, though autofocus is more suited to everyday moments rather than fast-moving subjects. If you’d prefer more of a traditional camera feel with a viewfinder (which really helps outdoors), then the Fujifilm X100V is still an excellent buy used and offers a more engaging shooting experience overall. The newer Fujifilm X100VI adds IBIS and higher resolution, but the X100V still holds up very well if you want to save some money.

If you’re considering interchangeable lenses instead, I’ve covered some solid options in <a href="https://thecotswoldphotographer.com/best-interchangeable-lens-cameras-for-travel-2025-real-picks-i-own/" rel="ugc">this article</a>.
— and it’s worth looking at slightly older versions of those to keep costs down.

All the best,
David

Hi Shane,

Please see my reply to your other comment for more details. The X-E5 in my opinion is a very good camera with image quality as good as any other X-Series camera right now. If you prefer the range-finder esque style then that will likely encourage you to use the X-E5 more. Combined with the 16-55mm f/2.8 II it would make for a very competent setup for your trip to Scotland.

All the best

Hi Mariam,

I haven’t personally shot it.

In terms of image quality, it would likely be around the same level as the Sony due to its 1” sensor (smaller than the other options)but with less zoom range. Being a Canon I’m sure the colours are good straight out of camera. I bought my mum a compact Canon a few years ago and she enjoys using it but it doesn’t give the image quality of the larger sensor cameras.

All the best
